Library Information Literacy Program

Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and when they have the ability to locate, evaluate and use necessary information effectively. It is a feature of recent innovations in education and a vital aspect of a modern library. The main purpose is to acquaint students and faculty members with the information sources, resources and techniques to retrieve the resources. Moreover, information literacy is also getting increasingly important in the contemporary environment of rapid technological change and proliferation of information resources.

In order to maximize the use of resources and systems, the following services and trainings are being provided from the library under information literacy program:

  • Provide general orientation on various aspects of library resources and services.
  • Encourage and promote the use of e-resources including e-journals, e-books, e-magazines, digital institutional repository, Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) etc.
  • Provide instructions and guidance on various search techniques.
  • Provide Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) service emphasizing appropriate reference sources, electronic resources for a particular discipline, class or assignment.
  • Assist students and faculty members in small groups to develop their information literacy skills.
  • Assist researchers to detect plagiarism through plagiarism detection software, and avoid plagiarism through paraphrasing tools.
  • Conduct training on proper citation and building bibliography in any standard style (APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago, etc.) by using Zotero and Mendeley software.
  • Conduct training programs and workshops on various aspects of library for users and library professionals from EU and other organizations.

Program Schedule: The duration of the program is about 1 hour. The program will be held on Sunday from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm and on Tuesday from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm every week. Besides, special information literacy program will be held assessing necessity.

Booking a Program: The EU Library offers such programs throughout the year. Programs may be booked by manual registration or sending email to lil@easternuni.edu.bd

Policy to use the Learning Resource Centre (LRC)

The following rules must be followed to use the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) in the library.

  • Users must show a valid EU ID card to use the LRC.
  • Users may use the workstation for one hour after they have signed in.
  • The LRC may only be used for course and research related works. No recreational use of the computers is permitted.
  • Cell phone, food and drink are prohibited in the LRC.
  • Personal software cannot be loaded on LRC’s computers. Users must save their work on a removable disk. No provision will be made to allow users to save any information on the computer’s hard drive.
  • No provision to use the LRC during the programs (orientations, presentations and briefing sessions). Advance notice will be given when the LRC is scheduled for any program.
